What is Alt attribute (alternative text)?

The alt attribute provides a text description of an image, allowing screen readers to convey its content to blind users. A relevant alternative text is required for every informative image (WCAG 1.1.1). Purely decorative images must receive an empty alt (alt="") so they do not clutter the screen reader output.
