What is ARIA role (role attribute)?

The role attribute specifies the semantic function of an HTML element to assistive technologies, complementing or overriding native semantics. Values like "navigation", "alert", "dialog" or "tablist" allow creating complex accessible widgets. The first rule of ARIA, however, recommends using the appropriate native HTML element before resorting to an ARIA role.
